Weekend with Jason Bowman: Master Class and Workshops

Join us for a weekend of workshops and classes with Jason Bowman, October 25-27!

Registration is below and reflects early registration pricing until October 18.

MASTER CLASS

Friday, October 25, 5:30-7:30 pm

Alongside the skills of humor, balance, and concentration, mastery is demonstrated in yoga through a keen sense of participating in all the movements of life. Join well-know San Francisco teacher Jason Bowman in a challenging but accessible flow class intertwined with playful takes on arm balances, twists and backbends.

DETAILING THE EVERYDAY PRACTICE

Saturday, October 26, 9:00 am - 12:00 pm

Sometimes we get bored in yoga, sometimes we get a sense of having plateaued in the practice. But it's at this moment when we begin to understand what it really means to be an advanced yogi. This workshop will hit a reset button and provide tools to more fully engage in regularly-led classes. In a way that is neither dry nor overly-intellectual, we will give context to the HOWs and WHYs of the practice, especially as related to core strength, breathing and transitions between poses.

HANDSTANDING

Saturday, October 26, 1:30-4:30 pm

The fourth best thing about handstand is that its precariousness forces one to pay close attention to what they’re doing; it’s a pose that tricks a person into presence. The third best thing about handstand is that it’s a factory of feeling; the body glimmers with life. The second best thing about handstand is that it breeds structural integrity; the fundamentals of alignment create a sense of continuity in the body. But the ultimate best thing about handstand is that if you can do it you’re basically guaranteed fame on Instagram.

LEARNING TO UNCLENCH

Sunday, October 27, 12:00-3:00 pm

Have you ever noticed your feet curled up in your shoes while stuck in traffic? Or your teeth pressed together while sorting through to-do’s? It’s the byproduct of this clenching that causes fatigue, both physical and existential. Thankfully for us though, voluntary relaxation is at the pinnacle of yoga. As the mind sharpens through practice, one comes to recognize that postures no longer deepen through effort and strength, but instead through control over the nervous system. It is the defense mechanisms therein where dis-ease arises. In this workshop we will practice the art of unclenching through methodical restorative yoga as well as a brief practice of sitting still.

Weekend with Jason Bowman

Jason Bowman leads teacher trainings, retreats, and guest lecture series both around the US and internationally and is strongly influenced by years of Ashtanga Yoga and Vipassana Meditation practice. www.jasonbowmanyoga.com

Nectar of the Moon with Gina Caputo

to Sep 30

Nectar of the Moon with Gina Caputo

We're so happy to welcome our longtime teacher and friend, Gina Caputo, for her Nectar of the Moon: Lunar Arts of Yoga Training. Details are here, but you'll need to hop over to the Colorado School of Yoga to register!

FRIDAY - SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 28-30

The Lunar Arts of yoga offer us the opportunity to regenerate, restore, nourish and heal schisms in challenging and troubling times. Our cultural embrace of the more solar practices of Hatha Yoga has been powerful but the spirit of Ha-Tha Yoga is actually balance and the union of polar energies within us. As yoga teachers, we have a rare opportunity to guide people to connect with and appreciate the qualities associated with the lunar current: receptivity, relaxation and ease through intelligent and intentional practices.

In this training, we'll explore ways to meet people where they are and invite an exploration of how to transform stress and tension and restore feelings of vitality and capacity.

We'll learn the wisdom behind and practical application of:

  • Anatomy of Stress
  • Autonomic & Enteric Nervous Systems
  • Pranayama and Stress
  • Macrocosm/microcosm awareness
  • Elemental Asana
  • Advanced Lunar Sequencing Techniques
  • Slow Flow Vinyasa
  • Yin Yoga
  • Restorative Yoga & Props
  • Yoga Nidra

Not only will this weekend be personally insightful as a way of bringing more of these practices into your own full life but will also highlight the ways you can thoughtfully fold these practices into your existing teaching.

While primarily created for current yoga teachers, this weekend is also open to curious practitioners and those who want to craft a self-guided home practice.

Times: Friday 5:00-9:00pm, Saturday 9:00am-5:00pm, Sunday 9:00am-5:00pm

Investment: $340 Earlybird before 8/28, $385 Regular after 8/28

20 hours of Continuing Education Units (CEUs)

The training is designed to build from one topic to the next so it must be taken in it's entirety, individual days are not available.

Register through the Colorado School of Yoga website by linking here!

Healing With Ayurvedic Herbs and Spices

Healing With Ayurvedic Herbs and Spices

  • Sage Center for Yoga & Healing Arts (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 8, 12:30-2:30 P.M

$35 PER PERSON

Taught by Sarah Kucera, Certified Ayurvedic Practitioner

As herbs are gaining more popularity in the wellness world, it's important to be educated on what it is you're choosing to consume for healing and overall well-being. Medicinal herbs and culinary spices have varying effects and what is good for one person for a specific need, may not be good for another. For example, the popular adaptogenic herb ashwagandha isn't as favorable to take in the summer because it creates a heating effect in the body. Another adaptogen, shatavari, would be an excellent replacement.

For common spices used in cooking, such as cinnamon, nutmeg, or cardamom and medicinal herbs like ashwagandha, shatavari, and triphala we'll review the following:

  • Rasa: The taste. Ayurveda has six tastes and we'll discuss the importance and elemental makeup of each.
  • Virya: The potency or energy, such as if it is heating or cooling.
  • Vipak: The post-digestive effect. What happens after your body processes it? Does it process as sweet or pungent, etc.?  Is it creating a drying effect, a heating effect, etc.?
  • Gunas: These are the descriptive words that describe the elements and thus, everything. Is it dry, light, or heavy and oily?
  • Dhatus: The tissues. There are seven tissues in Ayurveda. We'll discuss them all, as it is important in selecting the right herb for you.

If you are new to herbal therapies, have a budding interest, or have been using herbs but without the full scoop, this workshop is for you!

Ritualistic Wellness

SATURDAY, APRIL 7, 12:30-2:30 P.M.

$40 PER PERSON

The way we start, end and organize our day defines our being. A gentle beginning, a mid-day pause and clear closure keeps us grounded, while sporadic schedules can lack intention and leave us feeling unfulfilled.

Determining when it is time to make a change can be challenging enough, but how do we know what to add to our day and what to shed, or if the contents of our day are serving us at all?

This workshop is the "how-to" for designing wellness rituals and routines for living your best and truest self. It's for any level of wellness or Ayurveda knowledge and especially for those of you who feel like you're doing all the right things, but still exhausted and unfulfilled. We'll evaluate our energy balance by identifying the ways we refuel and the things that deplete us. Using Ayurvedic principles and circadian medicine, we'll transform our day into one that supports better productivity, increased energy, improved health and a greater presence in our daily activities, all with the guidance of rituals.

  • Sage Center for Yoga & Healing Arts (map)

SATURDAY, MARCH 17, 12:30-2:30 P.M.

$30 PER PERSON

Ayurveda teaches us that nature is comprised of five elements: ether, air, fire, water and earth. These elements exist in everything and we thrive when we are able to recognize and appropriately appease them. Vastu is a branch of Ayurveda that explains how these elements exist in our work and live spaces. When we use this as a guide, we can arrange our dwelling for better balance of energy and bring in the qualities we wish to invoke.

In this workshop, we'll review the five elements and discuss how they are related to the cardinal directions. Using the layout of your own space, you'll create ways for better design and placement of elemental qualities.

Note: The space that holds Sage Center for Yoga & Healing Arts was designed using Vastu principles. If you get that "ahhhh" feeling when you walk in or have been wondering about how you can bring a little bit of Sage's comfort into your own space, this workshop is for you!

Stand Up KC, Buy One, Give One Photo Session

  • Sage Center for Yoga & Healing Arts (map)

As holiday season approaches, it’s perfect timing to update your portrait and to give to others!

October 21, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. (THIS DATE IS FULLY BOOKED) + October 22, 9 a.m.-noon.

20-minute portrait session, $50 giving you downloadable images and provides a free session to a Stand Up KC family

The Sage Apothecary will transform into a professional studio with friend and professional photographer, Suzanne Corum-Rich, offering mini-portrait sessions. Each session is a 20-minute photoshoot, complete with a full online gallery and high resolution images available for download 10 days after the shoot. This not only gives your family a beautiful set of photos, it offers another family the chance to have one of their own.

For each portrait session you buy, a Stand Up KC family will get one for free, along with a framed 8x10 photo and a set of 8 wallets.

BOOK YOUR SESSION ONLINE BY CLICKING HERE

Stand Up KC is a diverse organization of fast food, retail, and other low wage workers from Kansas City, coming together to demand a living  wage and a voice on the job. Stand Up KC is the local chapter of the national and international Fight for $15 movement, which started in NYC in 2012. Stand Up KC has, from its inception, identified as anti-racist and built a multi-racial movement of working class people fighting for equality, freedom, and justice for all.

In Missouri, the minimum wage is only $7.70/hour. Forty-six percent of all jobs in the American economy pay less than $15 per hour, and are disproportionately worked by women, immigrants and people of color. These low-paying jobs often lack basic benefits like health care, paid sick or vacation days and protection from discrimination and sexual harassment. From home care to retail to warehouses and fast food restaurants, millions of Americans work full-time but struggle to meet their basic needs, like food and rent.

The average cost of a family portrait session in the US is $250. Printing an 8x10 photo, a set of 8 wallets and an 8x10 frame could add an additional $50-100. For a low wage worker to afford a quality framed family portrait to hang on the wall, estimated at $350, they would have to work more than 45 hours (before taxes), almost a full week’s worth of pay.

When you book your session, you’re providing another family with the chance to have their own professional portrait session. Buy one, give one. That’s something worth smiling about!

A workshop on the foundations of Ayurveda and applications for your healthiest life

with Dr. Sarah Kucera, Certified Ayurvedic Practitioners

Ayurveda is often considered a "natural medicine" due to the extensive use of food, plants, oils and bodywork for healing. What should not be overlooked is Ayurveda's way of reminding us that we are a part of nature and without respect to both nature's cycles and our own, we can become sick. Recognizing the patterns that leave us feeling out of balance along with those that make us feel better is essential and exactly what this workshop will cover. Improved health could be as simple as changing up your daily routine or adding a spice or quality of food to your diet.

$25, advanced registration is encouraged

Whether brand new to yoga or looking for some tips to fine tune your practice, this workshop is for you! We'll touch briefly upon the founding philosophical principles of yoga, including the yamas and niyamas (ethical restraints and observances), for a better understanding of how yoga differs from simply another Westernized workout. Physically, we'll cover the core asanas or postures that are often repeated in a yoga class so that you can confidently and safely attend a beginner level class. No experience required, only an open mind!

The well-being of our community is important to us. More than ever it is important to know that we are in this together. You are never alone. Let's come together to share conversations and boost our spirits, while simultaneously showing our support for those in our extended community. Have a photo session with professional photographer Suzanne Corum-Rich for $10 per person and receive a digital copy of your photos for your own personal use. All proceeds, along with 10% of our retail sales for the day, will go to Rose Brooks, Jewish Vocational Services and Operation Breakthrough. We'll have drinks courtesy of Boozy Botanicals (hold the booze) along with some eats and what we believe to be the best people on the planet--that's you!
